Checking your car registration status in Australia

Last updated on 13, May 2025
Keeping your car registration up to date is legally required in Australia. Driving an unregistered vehicle can lead to fines, demerit points and other legal penalties.
Casually known as a ‘car rego’, this involves registering your vehicle with the relevant state authority. This is to make sure it meets safety and insurance standards. Having a system where cars need to be registered helps with road safety as well as insurance coverage.
As well as the fines, demerits and legal consequences, driving an unregistered vehicle can also impact your insurance coverage. An unregistered car could invalidate a claim in the event of an accident.

If your registration has expired, renew it as soon as possible to avoid penalties. Each state has specific requirements for renewal, so make sure you comply with local regulations.
Set reminders for your next renewal to avoid lapses. Additionally, stay on top of vehicle maintenance to make sure your car remains roadworthy and safe.
