Frequently asked questions
There are cooling-off periods from the date you bought your policy, so you can cancel it if you change your mind.
Cooling-off periods vary depending on your insurance policy type:
- Boat, Business, Caravan and Trailer, Home, and Travel Insurance: 14 days
- Car Insurance: 21 days
- Life Insurance: 30 days
During the cooling-off period, we’ll refund your premium as long as you haven’t made a claim or don’t need to make a claim. We may deduct government charges we can’t recover.
For Travel Insurance, we’ll give you a full refund, provided:
- you haven’t started your journey, and
- you don’t want to make a claim, and
- you don’t want to exercise any other right under your policy
Check with your conveyancer or lawyer before cancelling your insurance as settlement periods vary. We’ll refund you for any unused portions of your premium. The new owners will arrange their own insurance.
If you’ve bought a new home, talk to your conveyancer or lawyer about when to insure it. If you’re now renting, you might like to consider contents insurance for renters.
If you’re eligible for a refund, we’ll refund most of the premium covering the rest of your period of insurance. We may deduct a pro rata proportion of the premium. This is for the time you were insured and any government taxes or duties we can’t recover.
For example, if you pay your premium annually, but cancel it after six months, we’ll refund you for six months. If you pay your premium monthly, we’ll deduct the number of days you were insured with us that month.
Note: If you’ve made a claim or you need to make a claim, this may affect your refund. Where we’ve agreed to cover a total loss claim, you won’t be eligible for a refund.
For Travel Insurance, we’ll give you a full or partial refund. That’s provided: you haven’t started your journey and you don’t want to make a claim, or exercise any other right under your policy. If you cancel your policy after the cooling-off period, we’ll calculate a partial refund. We’ll refund you on a pro-rata basis from the date you cancel your policy.
For further information, see the relevant Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).
The timeframe for receiving a refund can range from a few days to a few weeks. It depends on the circumstances of your cancellation, such as your payment method, any outstanding balances, or open claims. It’s best to contact us, or your Allianz Insurance agent, to confirm your eligibility and the refund process for your policy.
If you want to cancel your CTP Insurance, you’ll need to cancel your vehicle registration first. When you’ve cancelled your vehicle registration, you’ll receive a deregistration confirmation letter. We’ll need the confirmation letter before we can process your cancellation and refund any unused portion of your premium.
You can cancel your policy if you’re the policy holder. The policy holder is the person named as the insured on the insurance policy. Anyone you nominate as a third party on your policy, such as a lawyer, carer, or friend, can cancel your policy. This may be by a Power of Attorney.
We can cancel your policy where we need to by law. This is only likely to happen if you’ve broken our terms and conditions.
Without your request, we only cancel policies if we need to by law. Here are the main reasons why we may cancel policies:
- Non-payment: if you miss your scheduled premium payments. Let us know if you’re struggling to pay your premium instalments on time. We can work with you to find a solution.
- Incorrect information: if you’ve given us incorrect information about your personal circumstances or the insured property.
- Changes to your details: if you haven’t told us about changes to your personal circumstances or your insured property and we can’t reach an agreement with you.
- Fraudulent claims: if you make any fraudulent claims.
- Any other breach of our terms and conditions: if you don’t comply with our terms and conditions as set out in the relevant PDS.
If we cancel your Home, Car, or Business Insurance , we’ll give you at least three business days’ notice in writing before the cancellation date. This will be either in person, by email, or by post to the address you’ve given us.
For further details, see the relevant PDS for your insurance product.

*Conditions apply
Minimum premiums may apply
- Any discounts may be subject to rounding and only apply to the extent that any minimum premium isn't reached. If you’re eligible for more than one discount, Allianz applies them in a predetermined order. This means the effect of applying any subsequent discount will be reduced. For example, the aggregate effect of applying two discounts consecutively means that you won't see the full benefit of both these discounts.
Discounts don't apply to taxes or government charges. Option to change your excess
- Home Insurance: Not available with respect to any additional compulsory excess, imposed excess applied to the policy or to the Portable Contents excess. Any reduction in premium will not be applied to government taxes and charges, or to optional covers (if available and selected): Domestic Workers’ Compensation, Flood or Portable Contents. Minimum premiums apply.
- Landlord Insurance: Not available with respect to any additional compulsory excess, or to the imposed excess applied to the policy. Any reduction in premium will not be applied to government taxes and charges, or to optional covers (if available and selected): Landlord’s Workers' Compensation, or Flood. Minimum premiums apply.
Car Insurance: Under 25 Driver excess. A higher Under 25 Drive excess applies when there are no drivers aged under 25 listed in your policy details document. You can reduce this amount by listing the youngest under 25 driver who uses your car in your policy details document. For further information, see the relevant PDS.
