It’s important to understand that our policies have a number of general exclusions such as:
‘Travel alerts and other warnings’ which excludes claims that arise because you didn’t follow an advice or warning that a reasonable person would have been aware of that was either issued by the Australian government (‘Reconsider your need to travel’ alerts or ‘Do not travel’ alerts) or which was published in a reliable mass media source.
Or:
‘Aware of circumstances’ which excludes claims that arise when at the time of buying the insurance, you were aware, or a reasonable person in your circumstances would have been aware, of something that would give rise to you making a claim under the policy.
If you weren’t aware, or a reasonable person wouldn’t have been aware, of a volcanic eruption or ash cloud when you bought your policy and your trip is subsequently delayed or cancelled as a result of an ash cloud, you may be covered2. You must, however, follow government advice.
If there is a travel alert or government advice in effect, or circumstance you were aware of, or a reasonable person would have been aware of, at the time a policy is bought, we may deny your claim as this would be considered a known event for the purpose of the ‘Aware of circumstances’ General Exclusion.
