Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance, also known as a Green Slip, is mandatory in NSW.

CTP insurance covers your liability to pay compensation to anyone who’s injured if you, or other drivers of your car, cause an accident on the road. You must buy a CTP Green Slip before you can register your vehicle in NSW.

Trailers that are in a roadworthy condition are covered by the towing vehicle’s CTP insurance, so they don’t need a separate Green Slip.

CTP doesn’t cover damage to your vehicle, other vehicles, or property. You will need Car Insurance for this.

What's covered
  • If your vehicle caused the accident, fixed benefits (including medical expenses and percentage of lost income) for the driver at fault for injuries up to 12 months (unless catastrophically injured)
  • Your liability to compensate others (third parties) for death or injuries incurred from a motor vehicle accident caused by your vehicle
  • The third parties’ reasonable and necessary treatment and care for injuries sustained in the accident
  • The third parties’ loss of income and additional support required for injuries sustained in the accident
What's not covered
  • Damage to any vehicles or property
  • Theft of a motor vehicle
The level of cover offered by NSW CTP Insurance is defined under the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2017 (NSW). In some circumstances cover may be limited or excluded - for example, if the accident was the result of a serious driving offence. Support for others impacted by an accident

Liability for injuries or the death of passengers, other drivers and pedestrians involved in a motor vehicle accident caused by you or anyone else who drives your vehicle.

Medical expenses

Costs of reasonable and necessary treatment and care for injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. At fault drivers may also be covered unless they’re charged with a serious driving offence. In other states and territories, the person driving your vehicle may not be covered depending on accident circumstances.

Additional support to help recovery

Comprehensive and tailored support aimed at optimising recovery after a motor vehicle accident. This includes rehabilitation services to support the injured person’s return to health and coverage for reasonable and necessary costs associated with personal care needs.

Lost income

Income support for loss of earnings because of injuries sustained in a motor accident. The claimant must meet eligibility requirements.

Cover across the country

Cover 24 hours a day anywhere in Australia, as long as your vehicle’s registered in NSW. The cover’s extent will depend on the law of the state or territory where the accident occurred.

The cost of a Green Slip varies between insurers in NSW. Since all insurers essentially offer the same level of coverage, it’s important that you get a good price from a trusted brand.

Factors that impact price include your driving history, including demerit points, your age, the vehicle’s age and vehicle type. For example, utes and light commercial vehicles typically cost more than traditional motor cars.

The Fund Levy and GST are also included in the price you pay. The Fund Levy covers your ambulance and initial hospital fees, as well as lifetime care for severely injured people.

Yes. When you get a quote for CTP insurance, insurers will ask you for your driving history, including any demerit points you might have incurred. This helps determine your risk profile and ensures you’re being quoted the best premium we can offer. Most insurers offer safe driving discounts for those customers who haven’t received any demerit points.
There’s no difference between CTP and Green Slip in NSW. The terms are often used together to describe the same insurance.

A Green Slip is compulsory insurance that covers liability costs if you injure someone in a vehicle accident.

A Pink Slip in NSW is a safety inspection report which verifies your vehicle as roadworthy. Most light vehicles require one for registration when they’re more than five years old.

You need to have a CTP Green Slip in place before you can register your vehicle in NSW – your rego requires evidence you’ve purchased CTP Insurance. Allianz automatically sends proof of your insurance cover to Transport for NSW (TfNSW) once it's issued.

Your CTP Green Slip will cover your vehicle as long as it’s registered. To cancel your Green Slip, you must first cancel your registration with Transport for NSW (TfNSW). Any refund for the unused premium is calculated from the date TfNSW confirms deregistration.

TfNSW will provide you with a letter that can be used as proof that your vehicle’s registration has been cancelled. You’ll need to provide this letter to your CTP insurer, who can then process your policy cancellation and refund any unused portion of the premium.

You may only change your CTP insurance provider at the start of each registration period. Once your CTP Green Slip has been used to register your vehicle, the only way that you’ll be able to change insurers is by cancelling and re-establishing your registration.

Yes. Once they get their probationary licence, you’ll need to contact us to add their date of birth to the policy as the youngest driver. This may affect the CTP premium charged. Learner drivers are covered automatically.

Yes. As long as you pay for both the CTP Insurance and registration within 21 days of the due date, it’s possible to purchase a 6-month term with light vehicles weighing less than 4.5 tonnes.

If you own a heavy commercial vehicle with a GVM of more than 4.5 tonnes, you may even have the option of a 3-month registration period. If you’re a taxi driver in NSW, you have the option to pay your premium in instalments.

Your NSW Green Slip is attached to the car’s registration. When you sell your car, the CTP Insurance or NSW Green Slip will be transferred to the new registered owner.
