Insurance for 4WD
What are my 4x4 car insurance options?
We can cover your 4WD for accidental loss or damage, including for theft, fire damage, and in some cases, off-road driving.
With Allianz Car Insurance, you're typically covered for recreational four-wheel driving if the car was built for this purpose. If you don’t use the car in accordance with the manufacturer's recommended guidelines or take reasonable precautions to prevent any loss or damage, you may not be covered.
You won’t be covered if you use your car in an off-road competition.
We offer these car insurance options:
Comprehensive car insurance
Comprehensive car insurance covers loss or damage to your 4WD. It also covers damage you may cause to other people's cars or property.
Let us know about specific 4WD accessories to check if they can be covered by your policy. You might also like to consider adding any optional covers such as:
- Removal of excess for windscreen damage only claims
- Rental car after any covered incident
We also offer roadside assistance. This can cover you for a flat or faulty battery, flat tyres, emergency fuel, lost or locked keys and more.
Third party property damage insurance
Third-party property damage insurance helps protect you from the costs of accidentally damaging someone else's car or property.
This type of insurance doesn’t cover damage to your 4WD.

- Reckless and illegal behaviours or actions
- Undisclosed or illegal car modifications
- Unroadworthy vehicles – including unrepaired damage, rust, or mechanical or other damage that makes the vehicle unsafe to drive
- Damage to your tyres caused by braking, road punctures, cuts or bursts
- Mechanical, structural, electronic or electrical failure resulting in a breakdown or failure of your vehicle or vehicle parts

Frequently asked questions
Like other vehicles, CTP insurance is mandatory for all vehicles in Australia. You won’t be able to register your 4x4 without it.
CTP insurance doesn’t cover damage to your vehicle or other people’s cars or property. Only car insurance can cover you for this.
Let us know about any modifications to your vehicle. We can tell you exactly what you're covered for.
Some examples of modifications include any legal changes to the wheels or suspension.
Any illegal modifications, such as exceeding the height limit when adjusting your 4WD’s ride height, aren’t covered.
When you decide how much to cover your car for, make sure you include any modifications or accessories that have been added.
If your car was designed to drive on the beach or go on an outback track, it may be covered. However, you must adhere to the manufacturer's recommended guidelines when driving, and take reasonable care to prevent loss or damage.
You must also have legal permission to drive on the beach or outback track.
For many beaches in Australia, you’ll also need a beach permit. To get a permit, you can contact the relevant council.
Car insurance might not cover you if you get stuck off-roading if there is no loss or damage to your vehicle.
Allianz roadside assistance might be able to help. It can cover you if your 4X4 gets stuck in the sand, snow or mud. The 4X4 must be in a location that’s usable for a two-wheel drive recovery vehicle without using specialist equipment.
No. We don’t typically cover engine failure.
However, you’re covered if accidental loss or damage is caused in addition or due to a mechanical breakdown such as an engine failure.
For example, if you’re off-roading in your 4x4 and hit a rock, you might damage the undercarriage and engine. In this case, your insurance may cover the cost of engine repair. This is because the accident caused the engine failure.
Usually, timing belt failure isn't covered. This is because it's often a maintenance issue. The belt wears out over time.
However, you may be covered for accidental loss or damaged caused in addition or due to the timing belt failure.

*Conditions apply
We’ll reimburse the costs of any emergency repairs that are needed so you can arrange to drive your car home safely or to a repairer after a covered incident. But only if you can show us your receipts or provide other reasonable proof for any emergency repairs, if we ask.
Cover only applies if you can show us your receipts or provide other reasonable proof of the travel, if we ask. Transport could include buses, ferries, trains, taxis or rideshare services like Uber.
If you choose your own repairer, we may need a second quote from another repairer chosen by us just to make sure the quote you've received is reasonable. We may then authorise repairs, pay you reasonable repair costs or the car’s agreed value or replace your new car where policy conditions are met.
