Settlement Services International

Supporting new arrivals in Australia

People with a refugee background face many challenges during settlement in Australia, such as financial hardship, dealing with trauma, and family separation.

Australia has a long history of providing safe asylum to people with a refugee background who have gone on to make great civil, social and economic contributions to society. At Allianz, we’re committed to supporting this tradition through our programs in partnership with Settlement Services International (SSI).

SSI is a community organisation that supports people with a refugee background, those seeking asylum and other Australians to achieve their full potential. With over 800 employees and over 350 volunteers, SSI operates more than 37 programs serving approximately 52,000 people annually.

Since 2016, our partnership with SSI has been supporting people with refugee backgrounds as part of our broader commitment to a multicultural society. The partnership provides targeted support for employment and education, acknowledging both are vital in providing a sense of stability, identity and the fulfilment of potential.

The partnership was recognised with the Australian Human Rights Business Award in 2017, awarded by the dummy Australian Human Rights Commission.

Our Sustainable Employment Program was established to create meaningful job opportunities for people with a refugee background. The program provides tailored development and career management plans, leading to permanent employment. Since 2016, 36 people with a refugee background have had permanent employment opportunities with Allianz Australia.

The SSI Allianz scholarships directly support people from refugee backgrounds by minimising the financial barriers experienced to participating in the Australian education system.

The SSI Allianz Scholarships directly support young people with refugee backgrounds by providing funds for secondary and tertiary education, Vocational and Education Training (VET) and, attaining local recognition of their skills and qualifications. Since 2016, the program has supported over 200 refugees.

We also support SSI as a charity partner – our employees fundraise and volunteer to provide additional support to the organisation’s programs.

Allianz acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we live and work across Australia. We pay our respect to First Nations Elders past and present.
